Esther (Es. 1-4)

One day Assuerus, king for over one hundred twenty provinces, sat on the throne in Susan, capital of his kingdom. He gave a great feast to show his power and glory. On the seventh day of the feast, after drinking much, he asked for his queen to come and show her beauty. But the Queen, Vasthi, did not go.

So King Assuerus called his nobles for advice. His advisers said, "Queen Vasthi gave a bad example of disobedience. Let a decree be promulgated that she is no more the queen, but another be made queen in her place."  This he did. His officers advised the King to send servants to all parts of the kingdom to select the new queen. This was also done.

There was a man in Susan, a Jew, named Mordechai. He brought up his niece, Esther, Esther was exceedingly fair and beautiful. Because she was an orphan, Mordechai adopted her as his daughter.   She was one of the maidens brought to Susan under the care of Egeus, eunuch. The maidens were given maids, oil, perfume, clothes and anything they asked for was given to them. The maidens went to see the king one by one. When Esther's turn came she did not have any make-up. She did not use lipstick, rouge, oil orperfume. The king loved her more than all the other maidens, and he set the royal crown on her head, and made her queen instead of Vasthi. He ordered a big wedding feast in her honor.

Mordechai lived at the gate of the palace. One day he heard two eunuchs plotting the death of the king. He told it to Esther, and  she told the king. The two plotters were put to death.

One day the king promoted Aman over all  other princes. All the people at the gate of the palace bent their knees to worship Aman; only Mordechai did not. The king's servant asked him, "Why don't you observe the king's command to kneel to Aman?" But Mordechai ignored him.

When Aman heard this, he got angry. He asked the King to decree that the Jews be destroyed; and the King did. He gave Aman his ring and told him to do what he thought best. Aman sent letters to all parts of the kingdom that on the thirteenth day of the month of Adar, all the Jews will be killed.

When Mordechai heard this, he rent his garments, put on sackcloth and strew ashes on his head. All the Jews in the kingdom were sad. Mordechai asked Esther to intercede for the Jews to the king. Esther answered, "If I go to the king without being called, I will die." But Mordechai urged her to do so, even if she died. So Esther told him, "Gather all the Jews in Susan ans then pray for me. All of us will fast three days and nights, then I shall see the King against the law."Mordechai did what Esther told him.
