Fertilizer and Pesticides

During the first half of 1980, 402, 551 metric tons of fertilizer were consumed, 78 percent of which was imported.  These imports consisted of urea, ammonium sulfate and muriate of potash.  The local production of 94,000 metric tons was mainly the complete grades and ammonium phosphate.  Production has consistently been low owing to high costs of production and lack of materials.

Through a registration process, the Fertilizer Pesticide Authority classifies pesticides for general and restricted use. To safeguard human health and the environment, it requires all pesticide companies to have experimental-use permits. Safety training programs are run to instill awareness of pesticides.
