Where is
the highest railway in the world?
The highest
railway in the world is in Peru. A branch siding of the track rises to 15,844
feet above sea-level. But the highest point on the main line is 15,688 feet in
a tunnel called La Galera.
All the
railway lines in Peru belonging to the Central Railway of Peru are of standard
gauge (4 feet 8 ½ inches), like most railways in Europe and North
America.
The highest
railway station in the world is also in Peru, at La Galera. This station is at
an altitude of 15,685 feet above sea-level. Henry Deiggs was the engineer for
this extraordinary railway line, which was completed nearly a hundred years
ago.
