Verrazano-Narrows Bridge (The bridge with the longest span)

The bridge with the longest span is the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, which stretches across the entrance to New York City from Staten Island to Brooklyn. Work on the project began on August 13, 1959. The bridge was opened to traffic on November 21, 1964. It measures 6,690 feet between supports and carries two decks, each of six lanes of traffic.

The centre span over water, is 4,260 feet, the world record. The bridge carries well over 20 million vehicles a year.
