THE FILIPINO FILM INDUSTRY

The release of Vicente Salumbides' first picture entitled Unang Halik (First Kiss) triggered the rise of the Film Industry. During the Japanese Occupation, the movie industry was dormant. Only old local and some American movies were shown in the local theatres. Movies continued to suffer a setback when the entertainment popular in those days centered on stage presentations of zarzuelas. When the war ended, LVN, a prewar studio, produced Sawing Palad (Ill-fated Reward). Sampaguita Pictures, another major pre-war outfit, followed with Ulilang Watawat (Orphaned Flag). Dr. Ciriaco Santiago established Premier Productions with Probinsiyana (Provincial Lass), as the outfit's first picture. 1948 marked the beginnings of a Golden Age in the film industry. For almost 12 years, Filipino entries continuously won recognitions in international competitions. Local film personalities, formerly not counted among the "elite" of society, slowly gained acceptance amon...

CHINA CLIPPER: FIRST INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT TO THE PHILIPPINES

The year 1935 was a phenomenally crucial year for the Philippines. Not only did it gain the stature of a commonwealth, but it also was the year when it was catapulted into the world of international aviation. On November 22, 1935, Pan American Airway's giant seaplane named China Clipper rose from the waters of Alameda Bay near San Francisco, California, to start an epochal voyage that took more than 60 hours to reach the Far East, a voyage that would have taken a ship three weeks to negotiate. With a wing span of 130 ft., an overall length of 89 ft. and overall height of 24 ft., the China Clipper was Pan Am's biggest ocean-going plane at that time, designed to span the hitherto untraversed Pacific. It carried mail destined for Honolulu and the Philippines, and its historic flight marked the first international airmail flight to the Philippines. Commanded by Captain Edwin C. Musick with a crew of six, the flight was negotiated in 60 hours and 7 minutes of actua...

MANILA-ACAPULCO GALLEON: FIRST TRANSPACIFIC LINER

The first of the galleons crossed the Pacific in 1565. The last one was put to port in 1815. Yearly, for two and a half centuries, the galleons made the long and lonely voyage between Manila and Aca-pulco in Mexico. No other line of ships had ever endured so long, no other regular navigation had been so trying and dangerous. As the richest ships in all the oceans, they were the most coveted prizes of pirates and privateers. The galleons had a high forecastle and poop characteristic of their class. The apparent top-heaviness of the ships whose masts towered high above the water was partly offset by their unusual breadth of beam. In the latter part of the 18th century, the high stern and bow were cut down to approximate the lines of the frigate. Most of the galleons were built in the yards of Cavite and other parts of Luzon where there were safe ports with plentiful supply of good timber and native labor. The framework was often made of teak, while other native woods were used f...
